Coastal Cliffs of Big Sur

Apparently these rock cliffs once laid flat (the sediment layers are visible) but were pushed up about 250 million years ago when the North American Plate that supports the continent of North America, and the Pacific Plate beneath the Pacific--collided. Any geologists out there?

Carmel Art & Film Festival 2011

The Hugo Hotel San Francisco

Yesterday I drove to San Francisco. This photo of the Hugo Hotel on 6th St was taken through the windshield while I was lost and waiting for the light to change. You will notice furniture sticking to the walls and and dangling from the windows. The hotel was an abandoned tenement building but in 1997, Brian Goggin, with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, transformed it into a masterpiece “defenestration” art installation which means “the act of throwing someone or something out of a window.” It was only supposed to be up for a year but has since become a cultural landmark.

Not sure who these distinguished heads represent, but they were sculpted by local artist Jo Mora (1876-1947). One site describes him as a "Sculptor, painter, author, illustrator, cartoonist, muralist and diorama-maker, as well as an honorary member of the Hopi and Navajo tribes, cowhand, and photographer."

Frank Lloyd Wright Revisited

Posted a different view a year ago. This photo was taken yesterday. A little back story: Frank Lloyd Wright built this house in 1951, perched at the south end of Carmel beach. You may have seen it in the 1959 movie "A Summer Place." The cost to build was $125,000, with an addition designed by Wright after Mrs. Della Walker moved in in 1956. The house was apparently one of Wright's favorites. It's distinguished by its large stone chimney, blue metal roof, and bank of windows. Not sure who lives there now but they have a prime view of the bay including those insane surfers who ride Carmel Point's giant waves. Here's a view from the other side.

George's Birds

Every Sunday George Brandt can be found on Old Fisherman’s Wharf with his birds. He has twelve birds: 7 parrots, 3 cockatoos and 2 macaws. "People don’t understand how smart birds are. They even know their names," he told us. "There's Batty, Buddy, Rosie , Seven, Pickles, Paco, Channel, Jazzy and Billy…that’s 12.” (Actually that’s 9 but who’s counting). On days other than Sunday, you might see George riding his bike to the Golden State Theater where he works as an electrician. Thank you Al Mercado for this. Your photo was so much better than mine I had to use it.

McDougall Building

When the township of Salinas was founded in the 1870s, freight hauler James McDougall moved there from Santa Barbara. Because of his experience as a constable in Scotland, he was made the first Marshall. Unfortunately he died a few years later as the result of a gun shot wound. This building named in his honor was built in 1898.

Pumpkin Stuffed with Everything Good

What does this have to do with Monterey? Ok nothing except I was driving on Hwy 1 when I heard NPR radio's Splendid Table program raving about a mixture of bread, gruyere cheese, heavy cream, nuts, herbs, etc. It called out to me. There are a million variations -- use rice, instead of bread, add apples, spinach etc.. It's unbelievably delish. And a good holiday thing.

1 pumpkin, about 3 pounds
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 pound stale bread, thinly sliced and cut into 1/2-inch chunks
1/4 pound cheese, such as Gruyère, Emmenthal, cheddar, or a combination, cut into 1/2-inch chunks
2–4 garlic cloves (to taste), split, germ removed, and coarsely chopped
8 oz. bacon or sweet Italian sausage, cooked and drained
About 1/4 cup snipped fresh chives or sliced scallions
1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme
About 1/3 cup heavy cream
Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg

The original recipe calls for bacon instead of sausage. Dorie Greenspan's instructions:

Center a rack in the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment, or find a Dutch oven with a diameter that’s just a tiny bit larger than your pumpkin. If you bake the pumpkin in a casserole, it will keep its shape, but it might stick to the casserole, so you’ll have to serve it from the pot—which is an appealingly homey way to serve it. If you bake it on a baking sheet, you can present it freestanding, but maneuvering a heavy stuffed pumpkin with a softened shell isn’t so easy. However, since I love the way the unencumbered pumpkin looks in the center of the table, I’ve always taken my chances with the baked-on-a-sheet method, and so far, I’ve been lucky.

Using a very sturdy knife—and caution—cut a cap out of the top of the pumpkin (think Halloween Jack-o-Lantern). It’s easiest to work your knife around the top of the pumpkin at a 45-degree angle. You want to cut off enough of the top to make it easy for you to work inside the pumpkin. Clear away the seeds and strings from the cap and from inside the pumpkin. Season the inside of the pumpkin generously with salt and pepper, and put it on the baking sheet or in the pot.

Toss the bread, cheese, garlic, sausage, and herbs together in a bowl. Season with pepper—you probably have enough salt from the sausage and cheese, but taste to be sure—and pack the mix into the pumpkin. The pumpkin should be well filled—you might have a little too much filling, or you might need to add to it. Stir the cream with the nutmeg and some salt and pepper and pour it into the pumpkin. Again, you might have too much or too little—you don’t want the ingredients to swim in cream, but you do want them nicely moistened. (It’s hard to go wrong here.)

Put the cap in place and bake the pumpkin for about 2 hours—check after 90 minutes—or until everything inside the pumpkin is bubbling and the flesh of the pumpkin is tender enough to be pierced easily with the tip of a knife. Because the pumpkin will have exuded liquid, I like to remove the cap during the last 20 minutes or so, so that the liquid can bake away and the top of the stuffing can brown a little.

When the pumpkin is ready, carefully, very carefully—it’s heavy, hot, and wobbly—bring it to the table or transfer it to a platter that you’ll bring to the table.

Serving

You have a choice—you can either spoon out portions of the filling, making sure to get a generous amount of pumpkin into the spoonful, or you can dig into the pumpkin with a big spoon, pull the pumpkin meat into the filling, and then mix everything up. I’m a fan of the pull-and-mix option. Served in hearty portions followed by a salad, the pumpkin is a perfect cold-weather main course; served in generous spoonfuls, it’s just right alongside the Thanksgiving turkey.

A Tale of Two Walls

This is the first brick wall (and house) built in Monterey around the time of the Civil War. Like the guy who built the first theater, the owner left to seek his fortune in the Gold Rush and never came back.

This wall below at Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur, was designed by artist Kaffe Fassett a few years ago and was built in three days with the help of restaurant workers.

Robinson Jeffers

One day in 1918 poet Robinson Jeffers and his wife Una decided to build a stone house overlooking Carmel Bay. It was made from boulders brought up by horse and wagon from the cove below. In those days you could buy a lot for $10.00. Today they cost around 40 squillion dollars. In 1920 he decided to build Hawk Tower next door. Visiting guests included Sinclair Lewis, Charles Lindbergh, George Gershwin and Charlie Chaplin, even though they didn't have electricity up there until after WW II. PS Taken yesterday at sunset.

Monarch Sanctuary

Every year fleets (droves?) of Monarch butterflies arrive in Pacific Grove where they rest and eat here in a shady Eucalyptus grove. They're quite hard to see up in the trees so examining one up close in a daisy bush is a good idea.

California's First Theater

As the story goes, Jack Swan, an English sailor who settled in Monterey in 1843 built this tavern/theater still standing on the corner of Pacific and Scott, from lumber salvaged from a shipwreck.With crates and barrels for benches, whale-oil lamps for footlights and blankets for curtains, he produced popular melodramas -- until 1850 that is when he pretty much dropped everything to seek his fortune in the Gold Rush. PS That's a whale rib over the entrance.

This mural panel painted by Ariss, which stands across from the Cannery Row waterfront, depicts a slice of daily life down on the "row", including a few colorful characters who lived in abandoned pipes.

There is a restaurant (Rosines) in downtown Monterey known for its generous portions. When you order a slice of cake you get about 1/8 of an entire cake. Maybe not such a good thing, but I can't help marveling at the sheer confectionary overkill. It's like the 1950s.

I think I momentarily blinded him with my flash as he emerged from the sea depths, but I was smitten with this surfboard. Short boards are known to be fast and easy to turn but not for beginners. Taken a few days ago on Carmel beach.

This house on Ocean View Blvd in Pacific Grove is surrounded by ornate Victorians. I'm not sure what style of architecture is is, exactly. Maybe Byzantine Farmhouse.

Today, two (apparently) bored boys were told to sit on a bus bench while their mother shopped inside the eyeglass store in Carmel. The moment she left, one got the other in a headlock and the most unbelievable wrestling match ensued.

Noticed this in front of me while stopped at a stop sign yesterday in Carmel. Can't say I've ever seen such a creative use of a dirty window.

This is a view from the coast south of Carmel. It's the exact same vista the Ohlone Indians looked out on when they lived in this spot in the 1700s -- a fact that makes me feel very small in a good sort of way. Watery Wednesday has an entire sea of H20 images.

Taken at a local dog show in Carmel Valley. I appreciate the fact that everybody has their thing in life, but dog show culture is something I've never quite been able to grasp.
